Getting Noticed by search engines
Once the blog site has been set up it is clearly important to let people know by promoting your site.
- Using the features in Postach.io to notify Facebook friends and Twitter followers is one method.
IMPORTANT It is recommended that you do not use this for every single post you make, otherwise your friends and followers will either get annoyed, or simply start ignoring the messages because of familiarity.
Also, the current facility in postach.io doesn't generate a very useful or informative message, so it might be better (until this is fixed) if you post your own notification on Facebook and Twitter.
- Get friends and other people you know put links to our new blog on heir web sites. Don’t forget to set up reciprocal links back to them. Perhaps set up a page on your blog to contain useful links.
- Set up Google Analytics and Google Search. Regardless of what you may personally feel about Google, they are the largest search engine so it is important to ensure this is set up correctly.
- Google analytics is relatively simple to set up, but it is also useful as it provides a vast amount of information about who has been visiting your site. http://www.google.com/analytics/ Remember to set the Analytics code on the Settings page of your blog to ensure Google recognises the site.
- Alongside this, make sure the site is registered with Google Search through Google Webmaster Tools. http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ The process is relatively straightforward; just be sure to read carefully and follow the steps. Do not be tempted to rush the process.
- Make sure the site content is set up for Google to read when it crawls the web. On a normal web site there would be a start page of some sort, usually called index.html, default.html, or .asp, etc. These start pages would be where you make sure the content is useful and what you want Google to see.
A blog site works slightly differently and does not have a start page in the same way. Do not be confused by the fact that you seem to see what looks like the same page whenever you visit your blog. What you are seeing is more of a container or shell and not a traditional web page.
On postach.io, the ‘Author Bio’ in the Edit Site/Details section, is what Google reads, so make sure this is good. This is also the text which Google will (should) display under the website address of your blog in the search results.
